It's looking good so far, and I've only been working on it for four days. So it's going quick compared to my usual speed.
I know the ref I used for Dean is really popular (and I hate that. 'Cause it means no matter how well I use it, there are a million better versions around) but the back-lighting worked really well for the halo type thing I gave him. So I wanted to use it anyway.
(The shading, details and everything look so much better in life. )
graphite, plus blendy thingies, putty eraser and pencil eraser (yeah, this is the first time I used those things. Just experimenting) A3 bristol board refs - Supernatural promo photo: Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester, + random wings photo ref. My FAQ: [link]
There's nothing i can say about this picture, that haven't already been said, but what the heck, I LOVE IT! it looks amazing! The blending is very well done, and it really looks like him, which is the main thing. I can't wait to see the finished result!
... Oh. You're actually right. I thought it was crazy people offering to buy it before they'd even seen the finished product, but you're right, it does look like him, so the rest of the image doesn't matter quite as much. Well. Thanks for changing my mind on that. xD Now I'm not so worried everyone'll hate it when they finally see a scan.
Yes, I agree. Present Cas is so innocent, it's really adorable.
For a long time the characters have been getting darker, like in earlier seasons the boys felt terrible if someone innocent had to die for the greater good. So everyone's been saying the boys have lost that, because they don't even exorcise demons anymore. They just kill them, and the host, with Ruby's knife. So it's great to see Dean get his sense of morals back, when confronted with how he'd turn out if he kept on going like this. So yeah, I agree, Dean's getting with the program again, and this episode he felt a lot more like he used to be. Like he's got his fighting-for-good spirit back.
Anyway, the character changes were fun to see, but I'm very glad it was just for one episode. (Except for Dean. I hope he'll stay adamant, instead of going back to bitching about being tired and wanting to give up.)
It's his innocence that makes him so well likeable.
And more importantly, I'm glad that Dean let Sam back in his life. They were killing me the last 3 eppies.
I understand that Dean went though a lot but by the last eppie or so of S4, even I was like, "man up, dude". Mostly what got that out of me was the fact he was upset with his brother to say things, we all know he couldn't mean.
And like you, it's great to see the changes but am glad it's just one eppie. Time to make their own future and come out on top at the end of the season. If I hear one more blaze of glory comment.....I'm gonna scream.
Apparently we are both rambling. lol. Well when you got a good show, it'll do that to ya.
Yeah, the boys being apart was killing me, too, and I knew it wouldn't last, but I didn't know for how long. I'm glad it was just a couple episodes.
OH GOD YES. The idea that it won't have a happy ending is unacceptable to me. I don't want to hear people say the boys both dying in a blaze of glory would be "an ending worthy of the characters". To me, it pisses all over everything they've been through to kill them at the end. Even if it means they go to heaven. I'd much rather they stay alive and either retire, or carry on hunting happily like they used to (or, I don't know, maybe going back to how they were in season one isn't respectful of all the character growth so far. But I think they'd appreciate such a simple existence after all this doom). The perfect ending for me, would be them defeating Lucifer, standing over the trunk of the Impala, and saying "We got work to do." Just like old times.
Uh, I'm ranting. It's way too easy to get excited over this show.
I think it may be the reason I tend to draw screencaps instead of promo photos, 'cause I wanna keep away from something that may be overdone. And plus, in screencaps the guys are too busy being Sam and Dean to pose for the camera. They're trying to be in the moment, and that's what I want to capture.
Well, I'm talking crap. There's nothing wrong with choosing popular references, and actually I'm pleasantly surprised by how much positive feedback I'm getting on this, when people haven't even seen it properly yet. I do credit a lot of that to how popular the reference is.
Weirdly, a lot of the top and bottom is just plain black, so the drawn part itself would almost fit on an A4 page. I just wanted to give it more space, because it seemed more epic-looking, and... I don't know. It's just Dean's face and wings, popping out of the image, surrounded by darkness. You'll see. And you'll probably agree with me that it looks better that way than cropped into landscape format. (Well. I hope people will agree, instead of telling me I did it the wrong way, but I just had a feeling about it.)
And his head only takes up *counts* about 1/12th of the page. So that's good hair detailing... and I loved his hair from whenever that photo was taken. It had height, you know, and looked so soft and strokeable. But now it's a little shorter all over, and when I look at it all I can think about is running my hands against the grain of a buzz cut and okay, I have a problem and need to stop. (Seriously, I think I may have a shaved head fetish.)
Thank you! IT IS, IT IS. I finished it, and it does look great (even if I do say so myself). And I ordered an A3 scanner right after. Which is a little insane, but I just figured, what the hell. So this way, I can scan it huge and beautiful, and make posters, and pay for my scanner. And scan more big drawings huge and beautiful. And so on and so forth.
Actually, the scanner I chose was only £129 (about $200), which was way less than I expected, 'cause there were others on the same site that were up to about £2,500 ($4,000). But of course those were probably designed for a professional office, not one little artist working from home. I can definitely afford the cheaper one, even if I don't make any money for the posters.
Yeah, Dean's at his best when he's working anyway. So I'm sure he won't mind. x3
Sweet mercy, I love that picture sooo much. And I love what you're doing with it. Honestly, it's going to look fantastic, can't wait to see it finished. How big is it going to be? I'd love to have that as my wallpaper!
It's A3, which is... 16.5x12". And it's portrait format, but I'm gonna scan it big enough to crop it into a wallpaper. Actually, like I'm starting to repeat to people, I ordered an A3 scanner after I finished the drawing, so that I could scan it huge and get posters printed. So the scan will be big enough, and good enough quality for plenty of other stuff, too. If anyone wants to spend their money. Which I have trouble believing, but I know I'm gonna buy a poster of it, anyway. xD
Thank you. I'm so surprised people are freaking out over it. I thought they'd say the idea was cliched and contrived. But I'm glad people like it, and I'm glad I made it look good.
